Galti Ka Naam Shaadi

The very fact that such a high record number of jokes float around the topic of marriage — of which the most popular one is “Either you can be happy or you can be married” is a testimony of what people really deep down think of that noble institution called marriage..

Another favourite line for me is, “I agree that marriage is a noble institution... but who the hell wants to live in an institution (read mental)?” And another ha-ha-ha one is, “Marriage makes a coin out of a couple. Both sides don’t want to face each other anymore”
Seriousness, I think that marriage is a joke — except maybe for those who by their premoidal instincts have this compulsive urge to have eeeeeewwwww kids. All the couples I have come across either regret the fact that they married, wish to get out of it or do get out of it.
Of the remaining couples who do stay together, they resign themselves to the fact that such is life. They just wipe their tears and concentrate on their careers or on their children and so go about leading a dead life. The tragedy is that before marriage, men and women merely draw fantasy pictures about each other in their minds. Marriage draws out the real picture to the extent, that to be fair, I think marriage is also a truth-telling machinery.
Even in spite of dating for many many years, couples come to know about many truths about themselves, which is often a lifetime too late. A friend of mine who recently got married said that the thing which hit him the most now is that he wakes up in the morning with someone lying next to him. He misses that state of freedom when he didn’t have to share his bed. Then over coffee he has to listen to her chatter on about her friends and her family although he would prefer to read the newspapers or watch TV.
From such irritants to being advised on how to run his life, my friend says that the list is endless.
A woman I know told me that she didn’t know, that her man snores like thunder till their marriage. She also can’t stand the sight of his buddy who hangs around him all the time. These things seem trivial but it’s precisely these things which are the real passion killers. And the death of passion amounts to the death of a relationship between a man and a woman. In fact, that is the huge flaw in the institution called marriage — because passion is the primary reason for any couple to come together in the first place.
I don’t know if marriages are made in heaven but for sure I know that most of them lead to hell. Very soon, I am planning to make a film called Galti Ka Naam Shaadi. It will be a story about a couple whose love transports them to that heavenly institution called Marriage Hell! It’s the story after the love story!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
