Get ready for a glut of sex in Bollywood

It seems that Love Sex aur Dhokha wasn’t such an isolated case of Bollywood taking the voyeur route after all. If the films releasing in the coming months are any indication, the genre of sex is pretty much back in vogue though with a slick veneer of sophistication.
An industry insider agrees, “There was a time when sex was out of circulation in Bollywood. However, the number of films with sex and voyeurism as the focal point of the story, is on the rise. What is interesting is that these are not small time films by B-grade producers. They actually come with A-grade backings and conveniently intersperse a strong sex element in the story.”
One such filmmaker who is leading the bunch is Ekta Kapoor who, after the success of Love Sex aur Dhokha, seems to be fascinated with this genre. “Look at her line-up of films,” says a Bollywood observer, “Her next film is Raginni MMS which despite being a horror flick, has sex at its core as it tells the story of a girl whose boyfriend sends out a nude MMS of her. Of course you can expect titillation here. Then her The Dirty Picture too boasts of a strong sexual storyline.”
He could well be right here. After all who would have ever thought of making a movie on the life of Silk Smitha, who was once the queen of titillation? With the film boasting Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi, Tusshar Kapoor and Naseerudin Shah as actors and Milan Luthria as the director, Ekta is smartly packaging it as a film which would appeal to the masses as well as the classes.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
