Inspired by India

very season, after visiting fashion fairs, vintage markets and a lot of research, I start to design. I feel every design comes alive when you have a story behind it, something that has inspired you to bring alive the beauty of the design. Once I have a story in mind, I carefully select the shapes and the colours and think of how my design will fit in beautifully with it.

Once I finish the design of the bags and all the sketches are in front of me, the second step is to choose from the different types of leather that have been especially developed for this collection, and the other hardware materials needed to construct the bags. Especially for my collection, we have used different types of the finest couture embroideries, embellished with crystals, and I choose the best of the designs that will increase the beauty of the bags. I love how these special embroideries give a luxurious and fine detail to the bags. My main goal is to always try to make each piece one of a kind and special.
India is a very colourful, vivacious and inspiring destination. My frequent travels to India for my work with Hidesign gave me a chance to discover the colours and styles that reflect in the Indian culture and soul. You can feel magic the minute you step foot in this country, the exotic and mystic women in wonderful saris — vivid images which have been captured in my heart are inspirations for this collection.
Indian arts and handiwork have so much to offer and explore. To see the traditional workmen and karigars at work, and how they meticulously pay attention to each detail was indeed something that pushed me to create this collection that Dilip Kapur and I have dreamed of creating for some years now. All my inspirations are guided by a one of a kind sophistication in the colour palettes which I saw around me, and have incorporated for this collection. The one thing I really enjoyed was to mix and match the wide range of handcrafted embroideries, all of them with sparkling Swarovski stones and with the beautiful leathers which Hidesign is known for and is proud of.
Season after season, with all my different experiences at Costume National, Loewe, Trussardi and Giorgio Armani, I enjoy my work even more today. The deep insights that I have had working with some of the best in design has helped me learn how to carefully choose the leather and decide the best colours for it. What gives me tremendous joy is to see my customer with the bag!
After all, a perfect bag is like a mirror and should reflect the image of a woman in every detail — a bag that is a mix of tradition, style and practicality.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
