Chronicling a landscape
From a single image to plurality of ideas, his journey takes an interesting route on the artscape of ideas. The streak of his individualism is well-manifested even in his collage of many canvases. There, every single piece sticks out with its own unique tale and then suddenly merges into the whole set of a larger picture, which has a bigger story to speak of.
Gliding his way through the Chronicles Of Artistry as the name of his upcoming exhibition suggests, talented young painter Tamojit Bhattacharya gears up to showcase a visual delight of two distinctive sections in his latest oeuvre on art.
Busy lending finishing touches to a matrix of 25 brain-tickling paintings the deft artist lays bare his thoughtful imagination behind putting together an unusual theme. The exposition will be held at Kolkata’s prestigious Academy of Fine Arts gallery from August 8 till August 14.
“I plan to divide the gallery splurge into two significant segments. Yes, they are different on their own if viewed upon separately. Yet, they seem to forge a meaningful, logical connection between themselves when perceived in totality,” he contemplates on the content.
On the right side, is a greener landscape, while on the left, a concrete civilisation surfaces to the fore. So, in the entire narrative, there are elements of nature on one hand and an array of urban, figurative accounts on the other.
“It’s the same as two hemispheres. When they join to become one, a complete circle is formed, which connotes a symbol of perfection. Aren’t the countryside and the cosmopolitan the two facets of the same coin? Both rural and the civic form an integral part of our lives. Hence, man’s relation with nature is inseparable. The interchange of expressions and inter-dependence between man and nature also helps benefit the environment to a great degree. It maintains the ecological balance on earth and therefore, the union and communication amidst the two is of paramount importance,” he elucidates.
Not just the concept or the pattern of his impending solo show sounds unconventional, the ingeniously painted specimens in acrylic shades on canvas, paper and the paper-board also promise to parade an eye-stealing affair on the walls all over.
Tipped off between `10,000 and `50,000, the artist feels that this exhibition-cum-sale will enable him to find a strong foothold in the future art-realm. Coming in a variety of sizes, the dimensions differ from a maximum of 30” X 40” to a minimum of 16” X 12” inches.
Striving to strike an individual identity on the art-block, Tamojit reveals to shape up a vast collage, which may look like a huge apartment building on the whole, but when one takes a closer look to peer through its myriad nuances, depths and layers, a clutch of smaller slides unfold their own sagas embedded within each one of them.
A new description is evoked in every other canvas. “One may apparently discover that each canvas from a pile of seven-eight pieces juxtaposed together, seems irrelevant to one other and all stand out on its own merit. Nevertheless, when the full collage is being judged and assessed carefully, then every minute sliver falls in a coherent place and contributes to lending fruition to the broader spectrum. It’s like little colourful petals forming one beautiful flower or little rivulets joining a long river or a bunch of lateral branches aligning a mammoth trunk of a huge tree. So, every tiny particle appropriately becomes pertinent to the continuity of a wider canvas,” he reasons with much elaboration.
In one, we therefore find a car; in the next, there exists a verandah; further aside, emerges a closed window followed with a clothesline to dry the wet laundry and then above all, the round blazing sun high up in the sky. The collage, thus, spins in a yarn from the daily lifestyle of a residential flat. “There is an exciting puzzle hidden in every disparate tablet. One is most welcome to decode it by attaching all diverse beads on a single string together,” he winds up, throwing an open challenge at his audience. We agree to
