All shops in BIA use cloth, paper bags
The Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) is now a plastic bag-free zone. All food and beverage outlets as well as retails concessionaires on the 4,000-acre premises now offer cloth or paper bags in place of plastics. The environment-friendly move by Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) and its partners covers the 15 retail and 20 F&B outlets at the airport. According to an estimate by BIAL, this implies a reduction of approximately 35,000 plastic bags every month.
“An ongoing effort for the last couple of months went completely live today with a 100% switch to eco-bags at the BIA, catering to the retail across 500 categories and 5,000 brands. This initiative will ensure five lakh plastic bags are saved annually,” a BIAL spokesperson said. “The direct impact of this change is at two levels, firstly on the environment and secondly on the livelihoods of thousands of women engaged with “Ubuntu at Work” at rural locations across South India. These women make and provide cloth bags to the airport and will supply approximately 3,60,000 bags,” the spokesperson said.
