‘Baba’ beaten up, paraded in public
A self-styled “baba” was beaten and paraded seminude in Shivajinagar by the public following accusations that he had allegedly persuaded a married woman to desert her husband and stay with him. The ‘baba’, Nisar Ahmed of K.P. Agrahara, was beaten and paraded in Shivajinagar on Monday night. He was later handed over to the Shivajinagar police.
Residents of the area alleged that Ahmed persuaded Shabina Taj to desert her husband Mohammed Ali of Azadnagar in Chamarajpet. Upset over his wife’s desertion, Ali, a butcher, approached social activist Shama Sultana of Shivajinagar. Sultana, who went to baba’s house, saw both him and Shabina in a compromising position. She pulled Ahmed out of the house, and Ali’s family members, relatives and friends assaulted and paraded him.
Ali told the police that he married Shabina nine years ago and has two children with her. After facing a loss in his business, Ali and Shabina approached the ‘baba’ for his blessings. Soon, Shabina got close to Ahmed and refused to stay with Ali. She told her husband that she was very close to the baba and cannot live without him. Ali also complained that he became mentally unstable after he came in contact with the baba, the police said. Shama told the police that the ‘baba’ is cheating the public and has to be punished for causing a rift in Ali’s family. Ahmed claimed that the allegations against him were false and baseless. He has sought police action against those who manhandled and humiliated him. He has filed a counter-complaint against Shama, Ali and a few others. The baba claimed that he provided free medicines to patients, and that Shabina had come with her husband saying she was suffering from tuberculosis.
