Battle underway for Rajya Sabha seats
The Congress is set re-nominate deputy chairman of Rajya Sabha, K. Rehman Khan, for another term, but all eyes are on the contest between high-profile entrepreneurs, Rajeev Chandrasekhar and D.K. Audikesavulu in the biennial polls to Rajya Sabha, scheduled for March 30.
Sources said their contest assumes significance in view of the fact that both have met senior leaders of all three parties at national and state-levels and sought their support. All the parties have put off a decision on selection of candidates to the eleventh hour.
“We hope to hear by Monday morning. If we are assured of the support by any two parties, Mr Audikesavulu will file nomination papers on that day,” sources close to him told Deccan Chronicle. Mr Rajeev Chandrasekhar, too, is leaving no stone unturned after meeting former chief minister, B.S. Yeddyurappa last week. He is seeking re-election as his first term as an independent will end on April 2, 2012.
On Saturday, the core committee of state unit of BJP met to pick nominees, but Mr Yeddyurappa was conspicuous by his absence. Mr K.B. Shanappa, seeking re-nomination, and former IAS officer Ramakrishna, associated with the national unit, figure ahead of others in the list of probable nominees, according to sources in BJP.
