BBMP approves new tenders for Rs 305 cr

The BBMP on Tuesday passed a resolution approving the new garbage contract comprising 80 packages worth Rs 305 crore. This should effectively put an end to the rule of the old garbage contractor mafia in the city.

After dilly-dallying on whether to approve the new contract or to renew the old one, the municipal corporation finally approved the new contract and has made the segregation of garbage mandatory for the newly appointed contractors.

The public will also be required to segregate garbage at source. The approved tender has been sent to the government for approval.

Speaking to reporters, BBMP commissioner Rajneesh Goel said that if all goes well, the new contractors will swing into action from November 15. Till such time, the existing contractors will clear the garbage in the city.

Of the 89 packages, eight did not receive any response and one was technically not qualified. The remaining 80 packages have been finalised for Rs 305 crore.

Nine packages will be entrusted to Terra Firma Biotechnologies Ltd with 4G exemption (exemption from KTPP Act).

Terra Firma will be given the contract at 7.5 per cent less that schedule of rates for the 80 packages. Terra Firma will make door-to-door garbage collection and transport the garbage in compactors, the commissioner said.

An earlier tender quoting Rs 515 crore was cancelled in December. The new tender will save the corporation Rs 150 crore and the contactors chosen are technically qualified.

“The technical plan has been sought from all the 89 packages on the modalities of dealing with the garbage. Certain stringent clauses have been imposed in the tender to ensure proper disposal and segregation of waste. Geographical Positioning System (GPS) technology will be used to keep tabs on the quantum of garbage,” Mr Goel said.
