The BBMP has announced that additional trucks will be deployed to clear garbage in view of the festive season.

Palike commissioner Rajneesh Goel said, “We have spoken to farmers and since it will be purely wet waste, we will be handing it over to them. The garbage generated during the festivals will not be sent to landfills”.

“For, Bakrid we will not be selling the waste to farmers. We are planning to go in for decentralized bio-composting. I have asked the zonal in-charge officials to identify open spaces and we will bury the waste there.

This way, we will be composting the waste ourselves”, he added. Mr Goel also said that compared to earlier figures, currently, nearly 40 per cent of segregated wet waste is being handed over to BBMP. However, the Palike is getting less of dry waste as most of it is directly being sold to recyclers.

Hope on the horizon?j

Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok on Sunday assured that the city would be soon free from the stench of garbage.

He said that many private firms have been roped in to solve the problem at Mandur landfill. Hanjir Biotech will treat 750 tons of garbage at the landfill and will convert it into compost.

The Coromandel company, which has a unit in Pondicherry, will shift to Mandur within two months and 500 tons of garbage at the site will be converted to composte.

He also added that the government has cleared two projects for power production and composting. M/s Sataram, which has invested Rs 230 crore will generate power while Organic Waste India company will take up the task of composting, he said.
