BBMP gets Rs 1,175 cr

The BBMP has collected a record Rs 1,175 crore through property tax till March 26 for the 2011-12 financial year.

A Geographical Infor-mation System-based data gathering, revalidation of properties and an exercise of beating drums in front of the houses of defaulters have yielded the record-breaking amo-unts for the cash-strap-ped Bruhat Bangalore Mahangara Palike. With four more days left for the financial year and the month to end, the palike is confident of collecting Rs 1,200 crore. But it will still be short of the Rs 1,500 the palike had targeted through the property tax.

The BBMP antic of embarrassing the defaulters by beating drums in front of their houses and establishments yielded good results and helped in filling up the coffers, a palike official confessed. Some IT companies too, who were doing business running into crores, were in the blacklist and were made to cough up the tax with this exercise.
