BBMP has no time for dengue

Dengue has been creating havoc across the city, claiming eight lives over the last nine days. But the city corporators hardly had time to discuss the issue and find a possible solution when the BBMP council met on Monday. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike officials and Mayor D. Venkatesh Murthy failed to acknowledge the gravity of the situation and spoke lightly of it, even as the opposition party members staged protest in the well of the House.

The protest did not stop the ruling BJP from passing 47 subjects in under 10 minutes. Peenya Industrial Area corporator Thimma Nanjaiah demanded that the council should discuss dengue fever which is spreading rapidly in the city. JD(S) leader Thimme Gowda too demanded a discussion on the subject. When their demands were not paid heed to, opposition Congress, JD(S) and independent corporators stormed into the well of the House.

At one stage, when the ruling BJP denied Mr Thimme Gowda a chance to raise the dengue issue and went ahead approving the subjects, he tried to snatch the subject copies and tear it. But ruling party corporators – Umesh Shetty, Chandrashekaraiah and H.R. Krishnappa – blocked Mr Gowda and pushed him away from the BJP ruling party leader N. Nagaraj, who was calling out the subjects for approval. Mr Gowda demanded that the approved subjects be dropped and a debate on dengue be allowed.

The Mayor said that so far, 200 dengue cases have been reported in the city. The state government has approved a proposal to start a BBMP laboratory to diagnose dengue cases and to stock blood platelets, which are required by dengue patients. Mr Murthy said that he had instructed BBMP Commissioner M.K. Shankarlinge Gowda to hold more awareness programmes. Mr Murthy alleged that opposition party members are least interested in the development of the city, garbage menace and dengue and are blocking the subjects.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
