Bengaluru mayor may get 20-month term
If all goes well, the term of the mayor is expected to be enhanced to at least 20 months from the present one year.
After a long time, the wish of successive mayors will become a reality with the partial implementation of the Bengaluru Region Governance Bill 2009 and the Kasturirangan report on Greater Bengaluru governance.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Mayor D. Venkatesh Murthy said that the government has realised that the one-year term for mayor is not sufficient to implement any project and the mayor's post was thus becoming insignificant.
No mayor can deliver any visible change in a mere one-year term, he said. Even a small project like underpass or grade separator needs at least 18 months to come to fruition.
“The State government has been contemplating making provision to form a mayor's committee. The present BBMP council has about 30 months to go for the polls. The present term can be split into 15 months each for mayor for better administration,” he felt.
It may be recalled that the Agenda for Bengaluru Infrastructure Development (Abide) members have also pushed for the holistic development and planned administration of the city by implementing the Bengaluru Region Governance Bill 2009.
The Abide members strongly felt that the Bill being the dominant and primary for governance of Greater Bengaluru, incorporating recommendations of the Kasturi Rangan committee, it should be implemented before holding polls to BBMP.
