Bengaluru runs for safety
The City shook and a “tsunami” of panic prevailed, forcing the occupants of high-rise buildings to run out for safety. Apartment dwellers, tech park employees, bank staff evacuated the premises after mild tremors were felt in the city around 2.20 pm on Wednesday.
Over 5,000 employees and visitors at the UB City on Vittal Mallya Road were evacuated. People left their cars in the middle of Residency Road and ran to safety after news of tremors spread through mobile networks and social networking sites. The fire department and weather offices were flooded with calls.
C.V. Raman Nagar felt the shocks first, followed by areas in the Central Business District. Some households in Indiranagar and Ulsoor reported tremors lasting for more than two minutes, but on an average the tremors were felt for a few seconds.
The Seismology Observatory in Gowribidnur in Kolar district recorded the activity and has sent it to central agencies for compilation. The IISc too recorded the tremors in the ‘Broad Band System’, which is used for seismic activity in the surroundings. “Some minor readings were reported on Wednesday. We are calculating results,” said Prof T.G. Sitharam from the department of Civil Engineering, IISc.
