BIA launches new airport taxis

The journey to and from the airport will become more safe and reliable with the launch of the airport taxi service by Bengaluru International Airport (BIA). The new service, BIAL said, will eliminate touts and over-charging by cab drivers. A customer can also swipe his debit/ credit card in the taxi to pay the fare.

A brand new fleet of taxis with a unique identity was launched on Thursday which BIAL claimed was the first such service in the country. There are 2,000 cars in the fleet and 1,400 were flagged off on Thursday; with the other 600 entering the fleet by the end of 2012. This fleet will be in addition to the existing 550 KSTDC taxies.

“We, at BIAL, consider the drivers as brand ambassadors who have a key role in helping us deliver an experience. We contribute towards enhancing their abilities by providing skill training, defensive driving and basic fire-fighting. We add to their personal well-being by conducting free eye check-up camps as well. Our attempt is to ease their stressful jobs which will reflect in passenger’s safety and experience. We are delighted to offer this huge fleet and mark a significant change in the transport experience of the city,” said BIAL’s vice president (commercial), Rene Baumann.

The classy white taxi fleet with trained multi-lingual chauffeurs is fitted with GPS/GPRS, digital fare meters, printers and POS (point of selling) machines to collect payments. The cabs can be booked via call, internet or mobile application. Speaking at the event, Additional Commissioner of Police for Traffic, M.A. Saleem said that 2500 jobs have been created via this service which is now the largest employer of organised metered taxis. It has also boosted automobile sales in the city and created 200 jobs in operations and call centres.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
