BJP braces for acid test at Belgaum session
The Legislature session at Belgaum in December and the impending exit of former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa is giving the ruling BJP the jitters.
If the Congress goes ahead with its plan to move a ‘no confidence’ motion against the Jagadish Shettar government during the Belgaum session, the BJP is in for a major embarrassment.
To add to BJP’s woes, Mr Yeddyurappa plans to launch his new political outfit in Haveri on Dec. 9, which will coincide with the Assembly session in Belgaum.
Sources point out that BJP may have to issue a whip to save itself from a situation that could trigger a 'no confidence ‘ motion against the Jagadish Shettar government. “BJP may line up a long list of bills to be tabled before the House just to ensure that party MLAs and ministers remain present all through the session. On the pretext that the bills should not be defeated and to maintain a quorum in both Houses, the BJP may force its legislators to be present and not give an opportunity to the opposition Congress to try to topple the government before the Assembly elections,” reasoned a source.
The BJP’s fears are not unfounded, as any rebellion in the party due to the Yeddyurappa factor will only give the Congress ample opportunity to move a no confidence motion.
“If trouble erupts following Yeddyurappa’s event on December 9, the Opposition will still have four days left to move the no confidence motion. If the Opposition gives a no confidence motion next day on December 10 (Monday), the Speaker is bound to take up the notice for discussion within three days. Since the House will be in session till Thursday, the government cannot escape the no-confidence motion,” added the sources.
