BlackBerry net across state
From June 11, traffic violations across the state will be recorded on Blackberry mobiles. The booking of cases through BlackBerry was successfully tried in Bengaluru over the last five years. To begin with, 250 officers from the rank of assistant sub inspectors to police inspectors from district headquarters have been trained in handling and booking cases through Blackberry in Bengaluru in the last two months.
Police have directed district traffic police stations to start booking cases through Blackberry from June 11. Blackberry has a integrated network through which traffic police can also avail previous offences if that violator has not paid the fine. The police data centre in Madiwala will root to Blackberry handsets which will be operational in the districts.
ADGP Praveen Sood, head of the police computing wing, said that the extension of Blackberry will not only help maintaining transparency in enforcement details, but will also cut down major clerical work for police officers. “The BlackBerry network allows traffic police to feed data online and send the copy to the state treasury. Besides, the system will bring transparency and there is no question of an argument, even for the violator,” Mr Sood said.
The new system is also expected to increase the number of cases booked in the district headquarters. In 2011, `60 crore was collected through traffic enforcement in the state, out of which Rs 50 crore was generated in Bengaluru. In the coming days, the number of cases and the amount paid for traffic violations are expected to increase in the district headquarters. “In the coming days more police stations in the state will be covered with the BlackBerry network. Presently we are looking for active enforcement of this system in Hubli, Dharwad, Mangalore, Mysore, Gulbarga, Davangere and Belgaum.”
