Blueprint ready for infra projects in Bengaluru

A blueprint has been prepared to give a push to infrastructure projects in the city. Five elevated roads and stretches connecting the neighbouring states beyond the city will be developed to ease traffic in the city, said Member of Parliament (South) Ananth Kumar here on Monday.

Inaugurating the Kadirenahalli underpass, he said deputy chief minister R. Ashok, BBMP commissioner Shankarlinge Gowda and Mayor Venkatesh Murthy have drawn up the blueprint for development of roads, remodeling of underground drainages and revival of Arkavathy and Vrishabhavathi rivers with an estimated cost of Rs 10,000 crore. The state government will prevail upon the Union government to grant Rs 5,000 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the state will release Rs 1,500 crore in two installments and the BBMP needs to raise another Rs 2,000 crore. The blueprint is part of the Capital Infrastructure Plan with an estimated cost of Rs 22,000 crore, he said.

The five elevated roads will be constructed between Bengaluru and beyond Nelamangala to reach Pune and Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kengeri to connect Mysore, Benglaluru to K.R. Puram to access the highway to Chennai, between Bengaluru and Hosur to reach Chennai and Bengaluru to Kogilu to reach Hyderabad. Some of the works have already begun and the remaining will start soon, he said.

The city’s underground drainage system will be remodeled along with rejuvenation of lakes. High on the agenda is diversion of the Hemavathi river from Hassan to Tippagondanahalli to revive Arkavathy and Vrishabhavathy rivers, which are almost extinct, he added.

Solid waste is one of the biggest problems as the city generates over 5,000 tonnes of garbage every day. Plans are afoot to convert this waste into energy and the city’s waste has the potential to generate 100 mw of power, he said. Mayor D. Venkatesh Murthy said a delegation will go to New Delhi to study the solid waste management system in the capital.
