BSY will take on Eshwarappa in elections
In a clear signal that he will take on the ruling BJP, former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has indicated to his supporters that he will contest against state unit president K.S. Eshwarappa in Shimoga in next year’s elections to the Legislative Assembly.
Sources close to the leader said Mr Yeddyurappa was keen to send a message to senior central leaders of BJP by not only ruining the party’s prospects in Assembly polls but also trounce his baiters like Mr Eshwarappa. While he plans to contest from Shimoga, his elder son and Member of Parliament would enter the fray from Shikaripura, the home turf of Mr Yeddyurappa since 1983.
The sources said with such plans in mind, the former chief minister would address a gathering of people from difference walks of life at Shimoga on Saturday. It would provide him an opportunity to meet his well-wishers and supporters in his home district.
Among the special invitees to the meeting is veteran politician and former minister K.H. Srinivas who holds sway over Brahmin voters who account for 50 per cent of the electorate in Shimoga constituency. The leader has also ensured that 25,000-odd Muslim voters got goodies during his reign, and therefore would count on their support too. Lingayats, who constitute the third largest chunk of voters, would certainly vote for the leader, the sources added.
On the other hand, Mr Eshwarappa has been conducting health camps in his home constituency in order to ensure a smooth sail in next year’s elections. So, about 17,000 people have been screened at such health camps in the constituency, the sources added.
