Cauvery project to be inaugurated today

Bengaluru gets ready for a ‘Cauvery gift on Rajyotsava Day’. BWSSB Minister Suresh Kumar inspected the groundwater level reservoir at Jambu Savari Dinne on Tuesday, ahead of the scheduled commissioning of the latest Cauvery project on Wednesday.

“It was a huge and a difficult task and we have accomplished it. We are all set to dedicate the project to Bengalureans as a Kannada Rajyotsava gift,” he said.

The Minister announced that Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar will inaugurate the project on Wednesday morning and some areas of the city will start receiving water immediately.

The inauguration was put off after protests broke out over sharing of Cauvery water with Tamil Nadu. The BWSSB had later decided to have a low-key event.

But with agitations subsiding, the inauguration is all set to be a grand affair with the CM and several ministers in attendance.

The biggest beneficiaries of the project are the residents in new BBMP areas of Rajarajeshwarinagar, Dasarahalli, Yelahanka, Bommanahalli, Byatarayanapura, KR Puram, Mahadevapura and Kengeri.

Mr Kumar appealed to the residents of new BBMP areas to get authorised water connections and benefit from the project.

It will bring 500 million litres of water per day (MLD) to Bengaluru once fully commissioned. After Wednesday’s partial commission of 200-300 MLD, many areas in the city will get piped water supply for the first time.

Parts of Bommanahalli will be the first among the new areas to receive water. “The project will also stabilise and improve water supply in the core areas of the city,” said BWSSB chairman Gaurav Gupta.

Jambu Savari is one of the seven ground level reservoirs which have been constructed exclusively for the new project that will be partially commissioned on Wednesday.
