City cops to police suburbs
Gang wars on the city outskirts and the shocking shooting incident on the highway near Binnamangala on Wednesday have spurred Deputy CM and home minister R. Ashok into action. He is reorganising the Bengaluru police commissionerate to include the city outskirts too.
Growing anti-social activities in peripheral areas of the city and the suburbs turning into safe havens for criminals is a mater of concern for the department, admitted Mr Ashok, replying to a question in the Council on Thursday. Council member R.V. Venkatesh raised the issue of rowdies fatally attacking ZP member BEML Krishnappa in Binnamangala taluk, just outside Bengaluru on Wednesday evening.
He said such activities were increasing in the suburbs owing to poor policin and asked the minister to bring the outskirts under the commissionerates’ jurisdiction. Mr Ashok assured the House that a special Anti-Rowdy Squad will be formed soon, besides rehauling of jurisdictions. “We’ve noticed that the outskirts are more prone to criminal activities compared to city limits. The presence of the City Crime Branch makes a difference and helps in better policing,” said Mr Ashok, adding new layouts, increased migrant and floating population and the vast expanse of the jurisdiction have made policing a tough job.
