CM fills in for Governor at Bangalore University event

With Governor H.R. Bhardwaj skipping Bangalore University's 47th convocation on Thursday as expected, it was left to Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda to fill in as pro-Chancellor and present gold medallists and others with their awards.

Mr Gowda was quite vague when attempting to explain the Governor’s absence, only saying he was away in Kerala and so could not be present at the convocation . “He is the acting Governor of Kerala and was called there,” he said, adding,“I don’t know too much about these matters, they are entirely within the Governor’s domain.”

BU Syndicate member, KV Acharya, too said the Governor was called to Kerala for the Cabinet expansion and the Chief Minister had agreed to take his place after much persuasion.

Claiming that Mr Bhardwaj's absence had nothing to do with the controversy over the honorary doctorates, he said the Chief Minister was aware of all developments in Bangalore University and had offered to take care of them. Meanwhile, it was mainly the girls, many of them from rural areas, who walked away with the gold medals this year.

M.A. student, Rukmini K K from the Centre for Kannada Studies , who got as many as seven gold medals, had this piece of advice to give “If you want to do well, you can't waste your time thinking about what isn't right. It's all about being focused."

Anusha Ramachandra Singu from PES College, who baggged the first rank in B.Com, was thrilled.

“I believe that extra curricular activities are very important for success,” she said, clearly speaking from experience as she herself presides over the state level Kannada Sahitya Samelan, is a state level debater and has had a book of stories and poems in Kannada.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
