Cong gives veiled warning to Siddu
In a subtle but strong message to leader of the opposition in the state Assembly, Mr Siddaramaiah, AICC general secretary B.K. Hariprasad on Sunday said no leader in the party was greater than Mrs Sonia Gandhi or Mr Rahul Gandhi, and hence, the state leaders would do well to think many times over before making any tall claims. Speaking at a well-attended ‘Join Congress to Bring Change’ (Congressige Banni, Badalavane Tanni) rally organised by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) here, Mr Hariprasad asserted that the party had a long history of struggles and had been accepted by the people across the nation because of its good work and the sacrifices of three former Prime Ministers - Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, besides Mrs Sonia Gandhi.
“I request every leader to get rid of any illusions of bringing the party to power on their own strength. The Congress has always thrived on the sacrifices of the Nehru-Gandhi family. People still remember Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi for the commendable schemes launched during their regimes. Voters across the nation still believe in us and vote for us and Karnataka is no different,” he stressed.
On his part, Mr Siddaramaiah, who trained his guns on Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda and his predecessor, Mr B. S. Yeddyurappa, declared that if the Congress comes to power in the state, it will offer 25 kg of rice to all BPL card-holders. “It is a firm commitment from our leader Mrs Sonia Gandhi. Congress party never believed in giving short-time assurances, it believed in giving firm commitment to poor. As part of this, our government will offer 25 kg of rice to every poor household in the state”, he declared.
He also criticized the CM and Mr Yeddyurappa saying that he was surprised by the sudden tour taken out by Mr Yeddyurappa to drought-affected regions in the state. “I don't know what made him to go on a tour now, when Mr Gowda had declared nearly 120 taluks as drought-hit in November 2011 itself. But Mr Yeddyurappa did not realise that the poor were suffering when he was released from prison or while tucking away groups of legislators in a resort to unseat Mr Gowda”, he charged.
