Cornered rowdy takes on cops, shot at
In a scene straight out of a Bollywood movie, police chased down a rowdy sheeter and opened fire after he tried to assault them on Thursday around 4 pm in Jnanabharathi police limits. The rowdysheeter, identified as Nadeem alias Nadeem Khan, a resident of J.J. Nagar, tried to escape from the police who were chasing him. Nadeem was involved in more than 13 cases, including attempt to murder, theft, robbery and other cases in Byatarayanapura and J.J. Nagar police limits.
The accused Nadeem was also involved in damaging parked vehicles in Byatarayanapura on the August 23 along with two other accused, police said. “We had arrested two people, identified as Prakash and Lokesh, who were involved in damaging the parked vehicles, and we had tracked down the third accused Nadeem who was lurking around in Janabharati police limits. A team from Byatarayanapura police station, including inspector T. Kondarama and constables Kumar and Naidu had tracked him down and were chasing him.
However, the accused tried to assault the two constables with a dagger. They were injured in the forearm and their chest. “In an act of self-defence and to stop the accused from escaping, the inspector opened one round of fire in the air. However, when the accused did not stop, he shot him in the leg below the knee. Immediately, the accused and the injured policemen were shifted to Fortis Hospital, where the constables were admitted as inpatients. The accused Nadeem is said to be out of danger, and will be taken into custody when his condition is stable”, said DCP (West) Mr Sidaramappa. “Two constables and a victim from the shootout were brought to Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi and were treated as out-patients.
“The two constables sustained minor bruises and the victim sustained a bullet injury in both his knees. However, there was no need for surgery because the bullet did not penetrate deep. While the victim was running, the two constables chasing him were beaten with a wooden log by the victim, but the injury was minimal,” said a medical officer at Fortis Hospital.
