Day 2: Segregation long way to go

The city responded a little better to segregation of waste at source on Tuesday with the Yelahanka zone performing the best, meeting nearly 100 per cent of the target set. But areas like RT Nagar, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Langford Town, and Richmond Town continued to throw out mixed waste.

“The progress on the second day of the new garbage management scheme was encouraging compared to the first in all zones. But the Yelahanka zone was ahead of the rest in segregation of waste at source,” said BBMP commissioner, Rajneesh Goel. Farmers too responded postively to lifting of wet waste as it can be used to improve the fertility of their fields after composting. “Farmers of the Yelahanka zone lifted about 12.5 metric tones of wet waste collected from ward numbers 5,6 and 7 after paying Rs 5000 a truck. This is a good beginning,” said BBMP officers. Sanitary waste management too was more streamlined here with about 55 kgs of it collected from the 11 wards being sent to Ramki for scientific disposal. But the story was different in other BBMP wards:

Kanakpura Road
There was hardly any progress here as most people didn’t want to dirty their hands by segregating garbage at source. Despite a large number of multi-storied apartments and the presence of educated people here, there was zero progress in solid waste management in the area.

Kormangala and Shanthinagar
Although pourakarmikas did their usual rounds here on Tuesday, people were apathetic to segregation at source and mixed waste bags were left outside homes for pourakarmikas to tackle. The National Games Village in Kormangala seemed to be avoiding waste segregation as well as its residents complained it was a tedious process.

Shivajinagar
Here garbage was found dumped on the roads overnight. A shop owner at Safina Plaza in Commericial Street, Ahmed Ali, said people were dumping garbage in front of the shopping complex, knowing it would be cleared.

Apartments
Many small and big apartments have begun taking segregation of waste at source seriously. “Our apartment association has issued a circular to each household to segregation,” said a resident of Brigade Gardenia apartments.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
