Dose Mane: Nothing plain about this spread

The dosa might not inspire poets and sonnets, but biting into a crunchy and khara Udupi one with a portly dollop of ghee is akin to finding heaven for a South Indian food lover. So if you are near Mahaveer Jain College at VV Puram, drop into Dose Mane.

The restaurant serves 100 different types of dosas with three chutneys to go – coconut, onion chutney and ghee with chutney pudi too. We did expect more variety in the batter (like ragi, rawa, maize, lentil, etc), but it’s delicious, nonetheless.

Any fan of Udupi cuisine can explore the large selection of fillings. Enter the three floor part-fast food part Udupi restaurant and meals hub situated opposite Jain College. It's hard to miss with its large yellow and green signage.

The waiters rattle names faster than you say order and expect quick, clean service and homecooked food (with extra ghee though!). And the message is most certainly in the filling. From avalakayi, balekayi, halekayi, to corn, spinach, cabbage and lots more. According to manager Vasudev Shastri, “The most popular dosas are the masala dosa and special masala dosa. The 'Patrode' dosa is a favourite among regulars too."

Try the Benne Masala Dosa, the Ghee Roast Dosa, Ade Dosa, Rawa Dosa, Onion Rawa. Or try the special Sixer khara dosa - which comes with a plate of six mini dosas with sagu - the fillings include fried potato, corn, sprouts, onion, peas, dry fruits with the onion khara being the best. There is also soppu dosa that is yum. And what's a dosa without some lipsmacking chutney to go with it? And the three chutneys are delicious.

Though traditionalists might frown at some of the varieties, the adventurous can try the Schezwan, Schezwan cheese, dry fruits and bread uthappa or the sweet and banana dosa. There are also the local vegetarian 'omelettes' that one can dig into here.

The meals are also popular.

The first floor serves mini meals and second floor has plantain leaf meals. Sambhar, potato palya, fried banana palya, tangy rasam, raita, curds with puri or chapatti and rice. Sumptous. The owner Venkataraja Bhatt from Karkala also owns a choultry which might be why he decided to give everyone a taste of the native kitchen. The cooks from Udupi and Mangalore are the reason for the authenticity.

“On a busy day during weekends, we serve over 1,000 to 1,500 dosas.” Celebrating its one year anniversary from April 1 to 8 we will offer special discounts on food with all dosas at the fastfood counter (on the ground floor) being sold at Rs 20 only.

When it comes to dosas, the filling is what makes it worth the while and since there are so many to choose from here, we're sure you'll find something you'll relish.

Must-haves

Try Six Khara Special Dosa, the Patrode and the masala dosa. The mini meals are also a great option. From April 1 to 8, you can also have dosa at only Rs 20 at the fastfood section.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
