DVS deflects Russell Market axe

Chief Minister D. V. Sadananda Gowda has promised the Russell Market traders that the 85-year-old market will not be pulled down, and that they will get electricity to carry out their business.

The market, which was badly damaged in a fire on February 25, will be back in business from Monday when the Chief Minister will inaugurate it.

Traders in the historic market were shattered when BBMP Commissioner M. K. Shankarlinge Gowda had said that the market should be razed and rebuilt after a stability report by the Civil Aid Techno Clinic Pvt. Ltd. stated that the structure was unfit for carrying out any business activity.

Chief Minister D. V. Sadananda Gowda, however, assured them that the market will not be razed.

“We don’t plan to demolish the market. However, we are worried about the stability of the market inside and the safety of the traders and public. A meeting will be convened after three months along with the BBMP commissioner, members of the Russell Market association and senior Congress leader Jaffer Sherieff.

Till such time, the traders can carry on business,” Mr Sadananda Gowda told the traders. He also directed BBMP commissioner Mr Shankarlinge Gowda to go slow on demolitions and he would take a decision after holding a meeting.

After meeting the Chief Minister, Mr Sherieff said that he was happy that the CM has been thinking in favour of poor traders and thanked him.
