On election eve, BJP in hunt for right candidate
With the assembly polls due next year, the BBMP has to pick the right candidates for the mayor and deputy mayor posts, given that the BJP’s image has taken a beating in the last two years in the BBMP. The BJP-led BBMP has been mired in several controversies, pushing the corporation to the brink of bankruptcy, and the public seems to have lost faith in the administration.
The BBMP must provide good administration and carry out appropriate development work if it wants to win the hearts and minds of Bengaluru's citizens. Since the BBMP's jurisdiction extends over 28 assembly constituencies, how it performs is crucial to the party's chances of winning the elections. Outgoing Deputy Mayor S. Harish has given the party only 'passing marks' as far as the implementation of the budget and development are concerned. Very little of the budgetary allocation has been utilised to improve the city's infrastructure; on the contrary, infrastructure in the city has gone from bad to worse, allege residents of Bengaluru.
Though the BJP is in power in the State, the BBMP has failed to reap the benefits in the last two years.
The first citizen of the city must have a good knowledge of the city and a vision for its growth. Since seven CMCs, one TMC and 110 villages have been merged to form the BBMP, the mayor must have a plan for the development of the city. Grievances of citizens must ]be addressed, particularly the vital issue of water.
