Enough proof against killer SUV driver: Cops

P. Manjula (38) alias Mahi, who allegedly mowed down a labourer sleeping on a pavement last month, would not get any reprieve just because she has allegedly written a letter to Home Minister R. Ashok and top police officers saying she was being framed in the incident, the police said.

“She can write a thousand letters to anyone she wishes. But we have enough evidence to prove that she was the one who drove the SUV over the labourers. If she was not guilty, she should have appeared before the police and told us the truth. But now she is on the run which could be the result of her guilt,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic East Division) Venkatswamy.

The day after the accident, the police questioned the other occupant of the car, Ravi, who had taken it from his friend to go for a party. Ravi confessed to the police that it was Manjula who was driving the vehicle and not him. “Ravi also told us that Manjula was the only woman in the car and he handed over the vehicle after she requested him. Even those injured, who were witnesses to the accident, said that they saw only woman driving the vehicle and they have also identified her from the photographs,” he said.

Hanumanthappa, one of the eyewitnesses who spoke to Deccan Chronicle from Raichur, said it was indeed Manjula who was on the driver’s seat at the time of the accident. “I and Shivayogi clearly saw her face, though she managed to get out of the vehicle and escape. We could see that she was in shock and did not know how to react. After the accident, she sat on the wheel for a while and then escaped. We could not chase her as we wanted to save Nagaraj first,” he said.

“Banaswadi traffic police showed her pictures to her and we identified her. She wants to escape, that is the reason she is weaving stories. All of us, who were injured in the accident are all relatives. After the accident, we have come back to our native Raichur,” Hanumanthappa said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
