Ex-deputy mayor ‘abuses’ worker

A woman tailoring instructor working at a BBMP centre has accused former Bengaluru Deputy Mayor S. Harish of abusing and threatening her. But Mr Harish alleged that the allegations are being made at the behest of local MLA Narendra Babu.

The instructor, Padma, was working at the BBMP tailoring centre in Nagapura ward, where Mr Harish is the corporator. Recently, the palike transferred her to the neighbouring Mahalakshipuram ward (No. 68), while appointing another instructor Mala in her place. But when Mala went to take charge on Friday, Padma protested and Mr Harish had to intervene. After Mr Harish spoke to Padma, she agreed to hand over the charge and work in the neighbouring ward.

But later in the day, Padma approached the Mahalakshmi Layout police station and complained that Mr Harish and his supporters abused and threatened her.

“Padma told the police that she should have been given a valid reason for the transfer. Padma said she should have given an opportunity to continue working at the same place as she would have sorted out any problem, if any. She wanted to know why she was being targeted, while many others have continued to work at the same training centre for more than two decades. She alleged that Mr Harish abused and threatened her when she sought to know the reason. He also allegedly forced her to sign the transfer papers,” said Mahalakshmi Layout police.

Mr Harish said, “It is quite surprising… Padma accepted the transfer orders voluntarily. She was working at the same centre for nearly six years. Three more instructors of another tailoring institute were transferred and they did not have any issues. Padma has been transferred to the neighbouring ward, and not to any far-off place. I have no role in the transfer as it is an administrative issue. She is creating problems at the behest of Mr Narendra Babu, who has a political axe to grind against me. I have not abused and threatened Padma. I am ready for any probe.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
