Farmers relent, water project work restarts
The new Cauvery project to supply water to the city will not be delayed further as the BWSSB has restarted pipe laying work from Mandya, where it had faced opposition from farmers for delay in paying compensation for the lands acquired.
The Bangalore Water Services and Sewerage Board has reached an agreement with the farmers, who were claiming compensation for the lands acquired in 2008.
The acquired lands are being surveyed again and payment of compensation is expected to begin soon. “The department could not pay compensation to the farmers earlier as there were problems in establishing the ownership claims.
We had deposited the funds with the Special Land Acquisition Officer (SLAO) and Mandya deputy commissioner in 2008 and December 2011.
But district officials could not distribute the amounts as the farmers had not submitted the documents. The compensation will be paid soon after the fresh survey is completed,” said Narayan, Chief Engineer (Cauvery), BWSSB.
The negotiations have put the work on Cauvery Water Supply Scheme Stage IV Phase-II back on track. The BWSSB is yet to get possession of two acres of land near Netkal Balancing Reservoir. It is required to lay a pipeline of over 260 metres and carry out work on an open canal.
