Firemen inspect Soudha, annexe
Days after Deccan Chronicle carried a report exposing the lack of fire safety measures at the Vikasa Soudha, officials of the Fire and Emergency Department seem to have been nudged into action, who have now taken up extensive checks on fire safety measures in Vidhana Soudha and its annexe, the Vikasa Soudha.
The inspection of Vikasa Soudha, which was built six years ago, was taken up Tuesday and, on Thursday, the team will inspect the Vidhana Soudha. Once the exercise is complete, the team is expected to recommend measures to make these buildings safe from fire hazards. Deccan Chronicle, on June 23, had highlighted how critical fire safety norms had been flouted in the Vikasa Soudha, putting the lives of employees at risk. The building did not even have a clearance certificate from the fire department, but the BBMP had gone ahead and issued the Occupancy Certificate.
“There is a lot of wooden material inside Vidhana Soudha, which is susceptible to fire. Also, we are looking at exit points during emergencies. The staff at these government buildings need to be trained to act during emergency situations,” said a official from Fire and Emergency Department.
