HDK turns to Twitter to voice concern
What does a lawmaker do when he feels that laws are ineffective in curbing crime? He tweets. An enraged former chief minister and president of the state unit of Janata Dal (S) H.D. Kumaraswamy took refuge in twitter to express his ire over the recent incidents of crime against children. While condemning crime against children, Mr Kumaraswamy has advocated an extreme step like execution of the guilty in public.
The tweet reads: "Over the last week, three incidents have badly affected me. First, the demonic act of some miscreants' setting ablaze a 10-year-old girl to settle personal scores with her father, then the incident of an anti-social father, who fed poison to his child on the advice of some astrologer and the case of a cruel woman cutting off the ears of a four-year-old girl for the greed of gold. On hearing such incidents, I feel such persons should be shot dead in public. But as the law of our land does not support this view, I feel the police should promptly take stern action so that it serves as a deterrent to others and such heinous crimes do not repeat in future."
Interestingly, the latest tweet comes after a gap of more fifteen months (the last tweet was on May 9, 2011). The move, however, could be part of his effort to connect with employees in IT/BT sector, other net-savvy voters ahead of next year's elections to the Legislative Assembly. His Twitter page has 357 followers.
