Karandlaje factor
Did a spat between Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda and energy minister Shobha Karandlaje push the former’s relations with former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa to the brink?
Sources in the party said the argument occurred in the presence of senior bureaucrats and technocrats during a recent review of the review of the performance of the energy department. The sources said Ms Karandlaje was furious that she was not invited for a review of her department. Midway through the meeting, she entered the venue and asked the Chief Minister on why she was kept in the dark about the review. Though the Chief Minister remained calm, the minister pointed out that she was one of legislators who backed Mr Sadananda Gowda’s candidature during crucial legislature party meeting held in August last year. At one point, the Chief Minister ticked her off saying she could either sit through the meeting, or quit.
The sources said Ms Karandlaje reportedly vowed to ensure Mr Sadananda Gowda’s ouster on that day. Following the spat, Mr Yeddyurappa launched a tirade against Mr Sadananda Gowda and continued his vituperate attacks even after the Supreme Court ordered a CBI probe against him and his kin. Meanwhile, Ms Karandlaje made unsuccessful attempts to meet Congress leaders in New Delhi and extract an assurance to help Mr Yeddyurappa. Her strategy fell flat when party legislators opposed the idea of Mr Yeddyurappa walking out of the party and floating a new outfit, the sources added.
