Lawyers, media men clash
The terror suspects arrested by the CCB police were on Thursday remanded to 14 days more in police custody. The accused were produced before the 2nd ACMM court in connection with the alleged assassination plots in the city and the state. Police succeeded in escorting the accused into the court hall evading all the media attention even as the advocates roughed up some media persons. The advocates even slapped a reporter and the tussle continued till the police whisked away the accused. Of the 18 accused, police produced 11 before the court and sought for extension of their police custody. The court remanded them to police custody till September 27.
The counsel for the accused, Mr Anees Ali Khan, objected that due procedure was not being followed as a copy of the remand application has to be served to the defence. The counsel said the police had not cited the reason for seeking extension of custody. “It is an irregular remand application process wherein the defence was continuously kept in dark. The prosecution has apparently cited a reason for seeking extension of police custody, but this was not made known to us even after their application was allowed. We are discussing with senior counsel and will take a decision on appealing against this remand”, Mr Akmal Razvi, another counsel for the accused, said.
Earlier, tension gripped the magistrate court complex on Nrupatunga Road after advocates restricted the entry of journalists and cameramen just when the accused were being brought to the court complex. The advocates even chased away a few journalists till the gate of the court complex. Police deployed at the spot swung into action and advised media persons to walk out of the court premises.
