‘Let’s have society free of corruption’
Clearly concerned about corruption in the country, former President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam on Thursday urged students to start the process of defeating it at home. “There are more than 60 lakh houses in the country and the children in every one of them should start an anti- corruption campaign, telling their parents not to take bribes for any reason. If our houses becomes clean, our society and country will too,” he said, addressing 2,000 students of the Green Wood High International School here .
Advising them to aim high , he said unless they did it would be difficult to achieve anything in life. “ I want to see Indians on Mars and the moon by 2023. Sir C V Raman and Prof. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar are well known because of their unique achievements. Aiming small is a sin. Education gives you wings to fly. You should make use of it to achieve something unique,” he told them, also stressing the importance of quality teaching to build a strong country. “Our students need to become more curious about education, science and research and given the guidance they need,” he added.
Expressing concern over the increasing rural-urban divide, he said unless this gap was bridged all round progress was impossible. Later talking to reporters, Dr Kalam reiterated that he would not contest the Presidential elections. “I am happy with what I am today. I am happy being a teacher,” he said. He also refused to rate either the UPA candidate or the NDA backed candidate for the post, saying, “It is a good question. But don’t involve me in politics.”
