Man electrocuted, 3 injured at building site
A 30-year-old construction worker was killed and three others were injured when they came in contact with a high-tension wire in Girinagar on Tuesday. Of the four, Dodda Mallappa died on Wednesday. The injured Chikka Mallappa (20), Mounesh (30) and Ajith (19) are being treated at a private hospital. The condition of Mounesh and Ajith is said to be critical.
The police said Dodda Mallapa was scheduled to go to his hometown Yadgir to see his newborn baby and wife. Dodda Mallappa and Chikka Mallappa are brothers, while Mounesh was their cousin. All of them had come to the city a few months ago and were working as construction labourers at a two-storey residential building in Sriranganagar III Cross, belonging to Mr Madan Kumar Reddy.
The construction of the house is almost over and the four were giving final touches on the second floor when the incident occurred. They had hooked a wire on the first floor to avail power supply from an electric pole. The wire came in contact with a high-tension line running close by and Dodda Mallappa was injured when he touched it. The others tried to rescue him and got the shock.
The building violates rules as it has been built under a high-tension line. The owner has been booked for negligence. Bescom pointed out that the high-tension line belongs to KPTCL and it has no jurisdiction. KPTCL said the Department of Electrical Inspectorate will take up the investigation. “A team from the Inspectorate visited the spot and collected evidence. The preliminary probe reveals that the accident might have been caused when somebody was trying to draw unauthorised power from the high tension line. But we are waiting for Inspectorate report”, said KPTCL Executive Engineer Mallikarjun Reddy.
