Minor tortured in police custody, ASI suspended
A 16-year-old boy was allegedly subjected to third-degree torture by Kamakshipalya police after a theft complaint was filed against him. An assistant sub-inspector from the police station has been suspended.
The victim, Vinay (name changed), a resident of Kamakshipalya and an employee at a Bata showroom, was picked up by the police after the landlord of their rented house filed a complaint with the police that the teenager stole 750 gm of silver articles from the house.
Vinay and his uncle Chandru live on the ground floor, while the landlord stays on the first floor of a house near Ajenaya Temple in Kamakshipalya.
The landlord, Nanjappa, filed the complaint on November 6 and an ASI from Kamakshipalya, Thimmegowda, took Vinay into police custody on Wednesday.
Chandru said, “The ASI took Vinay to the police station, saying he had to be interrogated. My nephew was dropped back home around 4 pm the next day. Once he reached home, Chandru broke down and told us that he was tortured brutally by the police officer.
His private parts were tied and was threatened to accept the crime.” Vinay had difficulty in passing urine and had to be admitted to Panacea Hospital in Basveshwaranagar the same day.
“He had acute pain while passing urine. We admitted him to the intensive care unit. He is out of danger and is stable now. But it will take at least another week before he recovers completely,”
sources in the hospital said. Chandru protested in front of the Kamakshipalya police station on Friday morning.
Vijaynagar assistant commissioner of police M.K. Uttappa said, “We have forwarded a notice for the suspension of ASI. An inquiry has been initiated. We are also thinking of taking care of the medical expenses of the boy.”
