Trains on the Guwahati-Bengaluru route are gradually bringing people back to the city as rumours die down and the situation is returning to normal.
The chief public relations officer of the Northeast Frontier Railway, S. Hajong, told Deccan Chronicle: “There are three regular trains between Guwahati and Bengaluru every week.
Advance reservations have been made on all the three trains -- a good rush is being witnessed. Whoever is coming for booking is getting the ticket as per availability.
However, I cannot say whether the people going to Bengaluru are the same who returned to Guwahati from Bengaluru just two weeks ago.
All I can say is that a number of people are making reservations on this train.” Over 50,000 people from the North-Eastern states, residing in Bengaluru, left the city two weeks ago fearing attacks on them in retaliation to the violence unleashed in Assam.
“We cannot give the exact number of people returning, but we can say that the situation here is calm and people are willingly going back. Most of the people who fled to Guwahati were earning their living in Bengaluru. They will want to return to work,” said an official of the North-East Frontier Railway.
