New policy: Get ready to pay more for parking
The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) which recently obtained the approval for its Parking Policy, is now working on a parking action plan for the Central Business District (CBD) areas of Bengaluru. The implementation of the plan will make parking in areas such as Brigade Road and MG Road phenomenally expensive.
“We have got the approval of the BBMP council for the Parking Policy. However, certain sections of the policy such as the unbundling of parking from apartments have been removed,” said V. Manjula, Commissioner, DULT. She was speaking at a seminar on Doubling Public Transport organised by International Association of Public Transport. The Parking policy will introduce regulations in pricing of parking. For example, parking in the central areas such as Brigade Road and MG Road will be much expensive, than parking off-street in a multi-level parking centre. “On street parking has to be regulated and hence there has to be difference in fares between on street and off street parking.Hence the policy focuses on that aspect,” said Ms Manjula.
The implementation of the parking policy will be the joint task of BBMP and the city traffic police. As a next step, DULT has started a study on CBD areas. “We will focus on seven prime arterial roads in the city and after conducting a study in a phased manner, we will start implementing the new parking rules,” she told Deccan Chronicle. The policy has also suggested the introduction of a congestion tax on vehicles entering the business district. The DULT commissioner said that if properly implemented the parking policy will be able to reduce private vehicle use by 20 per cent. However, it will have to be complemented by increased public transport connectivity and reliability, she added.
