The new truth serum: Alcohol

Intoxicated people generally speak the truth. This was the maxim followed by the employers of a woman who forced her to drink beer and made her confess to stealing. The victim, who approached the office of the city police commissioner, said that her employers had forced her to admit stealing from their client’s house though she was innocent. Ms B. Suguna (25), a resident of T.C. Palya told the police that she had been locked inside an office and made to drink beer by Pushpa, Kumar, Uday, Manju, Babu and others. She was also allegedly beaten by them and forced to admit to stealing, said an investigating officer.

Ms Suguna was recruited by the Adithya House Keeping agency at Banaswadi and sent as a domestic maid to a house in Babusaabpalya. After working for some days, she was later transferred to an old age home. However, the owner of the house in Baabusabpalya had approached the Hennur police stating that some gold ornaments had gone missing from his house. Since Ms Suguna had worked there earlier, her employers suspected her involvement and asked her if she had stolen the ornaments, said the officer.Even though she claimed to be innocent, her employers allegedly took her to their office in Banasadi and forced her to drink beer hoping that she would speak the truth after getting drunk.

Under duress, Ms Suguna admitted of having committed the theft and she was even made to confess the same before the Hennur police who asked her to get the gold ornaments and sent the persons against whom she has made the allegations with her. But after reaching K.R. Puram, Ms Suguna again stated that she was innocent. She was then brought back to the office in Banaswadi and again harassed. Her father was later asked to come to the police station.

At the police station the victim narrated the entire episode and complained against her employers for forcing false confessions out of her. Later she was sent back along with her father, the officer said. Ms Suguna also underwent treatment at the K.R. Puram Government Hospital as she was beaten by the accused. Further investigations are on.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
