No surprises: Girls on top again

Students from the state have capped the excellent SSLC results with an impressive performance in the II PUC final examination with the pass percentage jumping from last year's 48.93 to 57.03, the highest in the last decade. While its not unusual for girls to beat the boys , this time they have done even better, bagging all the first ranks in all streams- science, commerce and arts. While the science topper is Deepa of MES Kishore Kendra, Malleswaram who scored 593 out of 600, the topper in commerce is Raveena Jain of Jain college, VV Puram with 591 marks. The arts topper is Shashikala of Dharwad who scored 569.

Bengaluru which had a poor showing in the SSLC results has done even worse in the PU exam with all its three academic districts doing poorly compared to last year. South Canara district , in second place last year, has shot up to first even though its pass percentage has fallen from 86.58 to 85.70. Udupi , in first place last year, has taken the second spot this year with a pass percentage of 85.32. Bijapur, Gulbarga and Yadgir are at the very bottom of the list.

While Bengaluru South academic district has recorded a nearly 3 per cent fall in passes, Bengaluru North district has seen a five per cent fall and Bengaluru Rural , a seven per cent decline. Toppers elated : Raveena Jain said she had chosen to do commerce against the wishes of her parents. “ But today my achievement has surprised everyone,” she said. Science topper Deepa, wants to do an engineering , says the PU result was a huge surprise. “I always wanted to be an engineer,” she confessed.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
