OFC firms cheating Palike: Corporator
Private telecom operators are taking the BBMP for a ride and evading road cutting charges and monthly rentals while laying optical fibre cables (OFC), said Yediyur corporator N.R. Ramesh on Monday.
At the first council meeting after D. Venkatesh Murthy took over as mayor, Mr Ramesh said BBMP Engineer-in-Chief (EIC) B.T. Ramesh has given permission to lay OFCs on 2,500 km, flouting February’ council resolution. As the case related to levying of road cutting charges is pending before the HC, the council passed a resolution in February to authorise only government agencies, like BSNL and Bescom, to cut roads, said Mr Ramesh and Nagapura ward corporator S. Harish.
“The permission for road cutting and inspection should be given by the OFC cell, which is specially set up for the purpose. Why should Mr Ramesh issue permission?” he asked. But private operators are applying for road cutting through BSNL and Bescom contractors and hoodwink BBMP. If OFCs are laid in BSNL or Bescom pipeline, the operators will not pay the rentals. This has affected the BBMP revenues, he alleged. BBMP chief M.K. Shankarlinge Gowda said engineer Ramesh cannot grant permission and the process should be allowed only by the OFC cell chief engineer.
