Prepaid auto stands no help
If you are the one who goes looking for prepaid autorickshaw stands to not get cheated by auto drivers, think again. There seems to be a huge difference between the actual fares and what is fixed at these stands, which have been touted as citizen-friendly initiative. Sneha, a BBM student, paid Rs 70 to travel from the prepaid autorickshaw stand on Residency Road to reach her residence in JP Nagar, while the actual fare comes up to only Rs 56. Santosh Kumar, another commuter, said, “I find a huge difference between the prepaid fares and the meter rates.”
The machines at the prepaid stands are faulty and most of the time, the police constable who is supposed to man the booths is missing. Even when the police constable is present, autorickshaw drivers refuse to take commuters to their destinations. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M.A Saleem said, “There is a shortage of police constables and we cannot depute them to prepaid stands all the time. If commuters face any harassment they can SMS their problem to 52225 along with the autorickshaw number. One should know that the fares fixed at the prepaid stand are only indicative and not final. Autorickshaw drivers are supposed to turn on the meters even when going from prepaid stands, and the passenger has to pay the fare that is shown in the meter.”
