Register all resorts
The recent killing of an assistant conservator of forests by inebriated revellers at a private resort has highlighted once again the need to speed up implementation of the Karnataka Tourism Trade Act to streamline the tourism industry. The Tourism Department is still in the process of framing the Act. Recently, tourism department officials met the CM to apprise him of developments related to the Act.
“The act will ensure that there is some kind of regulation governing unorganised tourism-related services like home-stays, private tour operators and others. But the most important aspect of the Act is getting home-stays and resorts registered,” said a senior official. There are over 3,000 home-stays in the state, but the tourism department has no data and no control over them. “Home-stays have grown into a prospering industry. But till the Act comes into force, we have no control over them. The Act will also bring them under the tax net,” he said.
The Act is being framed by a three-member committee of officials from the department. Industry stakeholders have voiced their discontent at not being involved in a process that concerns them. “The Act will bring a lot of changes in the system, which is good. However, in all this, the government must also include the opinion and views of the stakeholders, or else it will have no real meaning. They should form a committee involving the stakeholders from the tourism sector as well,” said chairman of the Tourism Committee (FKCCI), K. Shiva Shanmugam. A draft Act is expected to be ready in June.
