Ride flat out: 1,600 speed-breakers go
It was a personal experience that moved a young Bengalurean to do something about the dangerous and badly designed and placed speed-breakers in the city. Nithin, an advertising professional, met with a road accident in which his arm was broken. But worse than that was the journey to the hospital. “I was being taken to the hospital, which was quite far away, in a car. There were so many humps on the way that I kept screaming in pain,” he recalls.
Following this harrowing experience, Nithin got together with friends and colleagues and started an online campaign ‘Speed Breakers, Life Breakers’. Since then, young people have been going to various parts of the city such as Marathahalli, Whitefield, HAL and Old Madras Road to create awareness about the issue and force the authorities to act. The campaign is also online through emails and social networks and a video has been made about the initiative.
“We have been campaigning on the roads and now we will be making a video that will summarise the whole campaign that resulted in the removal of these bumps,” said Ajeesh, also an advertising professional. The city traffic police has announced that 1,600 ‘unscientific’ speed breakers will be removed. “We were recently informed that a hump near HAL police station has been removed. They have also taken away the speed-breakers on parts of the Old Madras Road and a few other places,” said Nithin.
The nine-member group has three students - Ali, Bipin and Libin - while the others, Ajeesh, Arun, Shanmugun, Sharad and Nithin, are working professionals. The group will continue with the campaign till efficient speed-breakers are introduced.
