Rs 1.5 lakh ransom could not save him
After abducting City-based jeweller Nitesh Bera, who was found murdered near Dobbspet on Wednesday, one of the gang members visited the victim’s house and took away gold and cash worth nearly Rs 1.5 lakh.
But the gang members wanted more and demanded that the family give them jewellery and gold at Mr Bera’s shop, BNR Jewellery, on Avenue road. They told the family members to deliver the ransom near Ganesh Prasad Hotel in City Market. By then, news of Mr Bera’s abduction had spread among his family and friends. Some of them waited for the abductors near the hotel. But the gang members, who came near the hotel on a motorbike, sped away on BVK Iyengar Road after seeing them.
Soon after, the kidnappers stopped communicating with Mr Bera’s family and switched off his mobile phone, which they were using to keep in touch with his wife Uma. The motive behind the abduction and murder is yet to be ascertained. Mr Bera’s wife Uma told the police that Mr Bera neither had enemies, nor had any problems with his 15 employees.
She alleged that the Halasur Gate police, under whose jurisdiction Nitesh was abducted, refused to register a complaint when she went there around 1.30 am. They told her to approach the Ashoknagar police. By the time she reached Ashoknagar, it was 3.45 am. The Ashoknagar police registered a kidnapping case. They are interrogating the employees and family members and also going through the call records of Mr Bera and his employees. The police are not ruling out the possibility of someone known to the victim behind the incident.
