Saradagi loss: KPCC chief says sorry

A month after the upset defeat of Congress candidate Iqbal Ahmed Saradagi in polls to the Legislative Council, Congress general secretary in-charge of Karnataka, Madhusudan Mistry, and pradesh Congress committee president, Dr G. Parameshwar, owned moral responsibility and reportedly apologised to party leaders for the setback.

At the core committee meeting held at the party office here on Saturday, senior leaders spoke out against lack of planning which resulted in the defeat of the candidate chosen by the high command.

The leaders reportedly pulled up Mr Mistry and Dr Parameshwar for not convening a core-committee meeting prior to the polls. “Though both were apologetic about not convening the meeting, leaders like former chief minister, N. Dharam Singh were vocal about why the leaders failed to arrive at a consensus prior to fielding the fourth candidate, M. R. Seetharam,” sources in the party said.

The sources quoted Mr Singh as saying that the party had wasted an opportunity after pulling off a victory in the Udupi-Chikmagalur Loksabha by-election. "All of us worked very hard to ensure the victory of Mr Jayaprakash Hegde, and earned the goodwill of voters. If you (both leaders) had taken a decision to convene the same meeting prior to fielding candidates to Legislative Council polls, Mr Saradagi's defeat could have been averted," the sources added.

Speaking to media persons later, both leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Mr Siddaramaiah and Dr Parameshwar asserted that the party tendered unconditional apology for Mr Saradagi's defeat. Dr Parameshwar admitted that the core-committee deliberated Mr Saradagi’s defeat at length, and that central leaders would take a decision on Mr Saradagi's future. The KPCC president said the party would send teams of leaders to various districts to iron out differences between leaders.
