Shettar favours one more varsity
As if the 20 odd universities in the state are not enough, Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Thursday said he will give his nod for one more varsity to exclusively study the co-operative sector. The chief minister made the commitment after inaugurating the International Co-operation Year-2012. Earlier, Karnataka State Co-operative Federation submitted a memorandum to the CM requesting him to fulfil three demands including the setting up of a university for the co-operative sector, release of Rs 5 crore to build a building for the Federation’s building and establishing co-operative training institutions under the grant-in-aid code.
In his speech, Mr Shettar said: "Even I come from a family which has respected and valued the co-operative spirit as my father was one of the directors of Hubli Urban Co-operative Bank." He suggested to Federation chariman, G.T. Deve Gowda that they should submit a proposal to establish a university. "You explain in detail the objective, the plan and I will certainly approve it," he said.
Allaying the fears of co-operative institutions which have to wait for the release of funds from the government to make up for the losses due to the waiver of farm loans they have provided to farmers, Mr Shettar said he had already instructed the finance department to release funds swiftly. "Keeping the bitter experiences of the past in mind, I have told the finance department to release funds quickly to the societies," he added.
