Special courts can speed up trials
Except for the 2008 serial blast in the city, where a special court was set up to expedite the trial, no other terror-related cases in the city, including the Chinnaswamy Stadium blast case, were brought before a special court.
However, official sources say that the city police are planning to send a proposal to the State government seeking its approval for setting up of a special court to speed up the trial in the stadium blast case, but the nod has not come through so far.
Police have registered five cases in connection with the stadium blasts. The cases, registered with Cubbon Park police station, are being investigated by the Central Crime Branch (CCB), who recently submitted chargesheets in connection with the cases before the First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Court.
Apart from proposing to set up a special court, police are also planning to request the government to appoint a prosecutor for the case.
They, however, say that the case of the recent arrests of terror suspects is still in the initial stages and the requirement of a special court will only be known after some progress.
State DG&IGP Lalrokhuma Pachau, when contacted, said, “Cases related to the CBI and Lokayukta have special courts, so a special court for terror-related cases are also welcome to speed up the trial. The recent arrests are still under investigation, so it will be too early to comment if a special court is required.” he said.
