Tanaz case: Belgaum police alert ministry
There is some relief for the family of Indian nurse Tanaz, who is suspected to have fallen victim to human trafficking or organ rackets and has gone missing in Riyadh. The state police on Wednesday alerted the ministry of external affairs about Tanaz.
Belgaum superintendent of police Sandeep Patil said the Union ministry is expected to bring the issue to the notice of Saudi Arabian authorities in a day or two. All the details received from Tanaz's mother Shamshad Shaikh have been passed to the Union government, he said.
Though Ms Shaikh had been writing to the external affairs ministry and the Indian embassy in Riyadh for the last one year, she had not brought it to the notice of police department so far.
“We were informed only last week. In such cases, the local police cannot do much as the missing person is abroad. We can only pass the information provided by the family to the Union ministry.
All the phone numbers from which Tanaz called her mother have been traced by the home ministry and the information has been passed on to Riyadh authorities,” he said.
Ms Shaikh has handed over the documents, including those concerning the transfer of money from Riyadh to Belgaum after Tanaz joined Mouwasat Hospital in Riyadh as a nurse. Tanaz had sent around Rs 6,000 to her mother.
Though most of the phone numbers from which Tanaz called her mother over the last two years are unresponsive, the police feel it is possible to trace the location of the phone numbers easily in Riyadh.
